Which students are eligible for ESL?
All students that enroll at Brooks are given a home language survey. If they speak another language at home, they will be tested with the W-APT. Based on this test, students are identified as proficient in English or limited in English. I work with students who are limited English proficient. I help them with the four domains of language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Generally, I pull limited English students out of class to work on language skills for 30 to 40 a minutes a day. When deciding who should be pulled out and how often, a team of teachers meets to discuss testing results and academic success.
Each February these children will be retested using the ACCESS test. These scores will arrive in May and determine the appropriate ESL service for the next year. In North Carolina, our curriculum comes from the WIDA standards. www.wida.us
